Sandakan: Marine police intercepted a speedboat attempting to ferry illegal immigrants into here. Marine Police Region 4 Acting Commander Supt Abd Nasir Othman said a total of 15 people, including the foreign skipper, were detained at about 12.35am on Sunday.

The group comprised three men, nine women, two boys and one girl, aged between five and 56, believed to be from the Philippines. Also seized were a speedboat and an outboard motor worth RM26,000.

Supt Abd Nasir said six marine policemen were monitoring the estuary of Sungai Batu 3 when they noticed a speedboat moving slowly towards the river from the open sea.

"When approached, the vessel sped off and a chase ensued. The team managed to intercept the speedboat, which had no registration number.

"The passengers had no valid identification documents and are believed to be migrants from neighbouring country Philippines.

"They were brought to the Sandakan marine police station for further action," he said.

The case is being investigated under the Immigration Act 1959/63 and Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants (Atipsom) Act 2007. - Winnie Kasmir
