Kota Kinabalu: Local Hanz Badminton Club (HBC) has successfully organised its first Open Championship as well as a coaching clinic at the Kota Kinabalu Sports Complex last week.

Programme director and head coach of HBC, Azahawari Osman said the two-day coaching clinic conducted by former international Rashid Sidek from November 1-2 has attracted 187 participants from Sabah and Labuan.

According to him, the response for the open competition held November 2-4 was beyond their expectation with a total of 756 players taking part.

"The 15 categories saw the participation of 756 players including those from Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Sarawak, Brunei, Singapore and Indonesia.

"The positive response was least expected by us and we thank all the sponsors and all the players for their support.

"With this success, we are now planning for a larger international event next year with cash prizes of more than the RM20,000 offered this year and hopefully will attract players from China, Hong Kong, Chinese Taipei, South Korea, Japan, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Philippines, New Zealand, Australia and France," he said.

Meanwhile, Sabah Badminton Association president Janih Bangud was the guest of honour in the closing ceremony to give away the prizes and lucky draw prizes. - GL Oh
