Over 1,500 attend Deepavali celebration

Kota Kinabalu: More than 1,500 people in the district celebrated Deepavali at the Sri Paspupathinath Alayam Temple at Bukit Padang on Tuesday.

A Puja prayer session was conducted followed by the Arati, also known as Showing by Fire, and Vibuthi (Anointment of Ash) rituals as early as 7am with hundreds of visitors from various backgrounds observing the moment in peace.

Like all cultural festivals in Malaysia, the public were also welcomed to join and indulge in their feast filled with Indian delicacies at the temple.

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Wilfred Madius Tangau and State Education and Innovation Assistant Minister also joined the celebration.

Earlier, Temple President Brigadier-General (retired) Datuk A Arulpragasam presented RM13,000 donation on behalf of five local temples in the State to Madius for the Tabung Harapan Fund. - Locksley Ng
