District Officer Bianus Kontong said there are no Mamak restaurants operated by non-Muslims and confirmed the halal status of their food in response to claims to the contrary circulating on social media.

Bianus said this had been found after an integrated operation dubbed “Ops Mamak” by the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs and other agencies at restaurants around the district.

“After the Ministry’s operation with the Sabah Islamic Religious Affairs Department (Jheains) Semporna, Semporna District Health Office and local authority, we found all the restaurants met the standards,” he said.

Bianus, who is also Chairman of the Semporna District Consumer Movement, hoped restaurateurs make cleanliness a priority and abide by the regulations set by the relevant agencies to ensure their food is safe to consume.

He stressed that consumers’ rights must be respected and that the district’s image as a famous tourism centre should be maintained.

“We want domestic and foreign tourists especially those Muslim ones to be confident that we mind the food served at the eateries,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Ministry’s Semporna Branch Chief Lauhi Mandor Bakar said three premises had been taken to task during the operation.

One of them was ordered close because it was dirty, contravening Rule 31 of the Food Act 2009.

Twenty officers and personnel from the four agencies took part in the operation, which will continue indefinitely, he said. - Lagatah Toyos
